About Marc Hauser

Marc Hauser is widely recognized as one of the leading advisors to the U.S. cannabis industry. Prior to starting Hauser Advisory, Marc worked as an attorney for nearly 25 years, advising clients and colleagues on billions of dollars of business transactions worldwide.  He has been deeply involved in the cannabis industry since 2018, being named by peer-ranked Chambers USA and Legal 500 as a Leading Lawyer who “knows the industry and players through and through.” Working closely with clients to balance risks and maximize optionality in a complex business environment, Marc has extensive connections throughout the industry that give him access to an extensive knowledge base and skill set, benefiting clients and relationships.  Marc is also an Adjunct Professor at Northwestern University's School of Law, co-teaching "Cannabis Law, Business & Policy".

While a Partner at Reed Smith LLP, one of the world’s largest law firms, Marc represented public and private single-state and multi-state operators; market-leading ancillary businesses; private equity, venture capital, hedge, and credit funds; banks and non-bank lenders; investment banks and other financial services providers; and real estate investment trusts. In addition, Marc spent considerable time advising companies and investors on strategies for doing business in this emerging industry, including institutional investors, multinational alcohol beverage production and distribution companies, SaaS providers, tobacco companies, and insurance companies.

Prior to joining Reed Smith LLP, Marc was internal deal counsel at Equity Group Investments (EGI), a private investment company founded by Sam Zell, a Forbes-listed multi-billionaire and an active corporate and real estate investor. Marc advised Sam and the EGI investment team for 15 years on billions of dollars of complex investment and acquisition transactions across industries and asset classes, developing a deep understanding of capital markets, distressed situations, and opportunistic growth.

Marc provides perspectives on the cannabis industry through speaking engagements, being frequently quoted in trade and business publications and via his periodic newsletter, Cannabis Musings, which has delivered his unique take on industry activities since 2018. Marc graduated Northwestern University in 1995, and cum laude from the Northwestern Pritzker School of Law in 1998, where he was a member of the Law Review.
